The international urban transport architectural competition for the new main train station in Brno has started! The team MVSA Architects together with KCAP Architects &Planners, JIKA-CZ and m2au is among the twelve selected architects making it a World League competition!
The new station is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), so its significance and purpose exceed the city borders. The public building, an important transport hub for all types of public transport, will become the new entrance gate to Brno and the Centre of a new district south of the historic city centre.
The design of the new station building includes roofing, platforms, the shape of the railway body and bridge structures, the layout of the interior and the location of the main dispatch hall. It also comprises parking, bicycle storage, and pedestrian connections to foster its integration into the urban context.
According to the mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková: “The bar is set really high and offers hope that Brno will have the most modern railway station in Europe.”
Of all 46 submissions to the international urban transport two-phase restricted architectural competition, the jury selected 12 participants who will be able to submit a proposal in the 1st phase of the competition. Among others there are Diller Scofidio Remfro, Snøhetta BIG, Grimshaw Architects, Benthem Crouwel, gmp international and OMA.
“The jury has preliminarily agreed that the evaluation meeting of the 1st phase of the competition will take place on March 4 and 5, 2021, according to the competition conditions. We should meet again in June and choose the winner,“ specified the director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, Michal Sedláček.
