Daylight Award nominates Rotterdam Centraal

The nominees for the Daylight Award 2014 have been announced. The Daylight Award is the biennial Award – of the Living Daylights Foundation – for those architectural projects in which an optimum is reached between daylight, artificial light and the spatial design.

The jury in this year’s edition of the award has, out of 80 contenders, nominated Rotterdam Centraal station as one of the 5 projects that excel.
‘Incorporation of natural light, the warmth of the sun’s rays and a modern look are important elements in the design. The largely transparent roof structure which covers all the tracks over a length of 250 meters, flood the platforms with light.
When entering through the city side of the bright and uplifting ceiling of the station hall guides travelers by allowing them a direct view of the trains. Travelers are guided by a direct view of the trains and by the daylight that penetrates into the traveler’s passage via the huge voids that extend through the transparent roof platform and down to the stairs.’

The prize winner will be made known on September 22nd  at the Light Congress 2014 in the World Forum Congress building The Hague.
