Rotterdam Centraal has also been nominated for the Wood Architecture Award (Houtarchitectuurprijs) 2014. In addition to steel and glass, wood is very important and constructive material used in the entire project by Team CS (a cooperation between Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten, West 8).
The entire concourse is lined with red cedar wood panels of uneven thickness and width. This method of cladding gives the huge surface a lively appearance. Western Red Cedar was chosen because it is very durable, stable and lightweight. The latter being important in relation to the roof construction.
Between the steel structure of the platform roof more than 250 wooden laminated beams carry the glass windows. Besides the construction these beams also have a functional and aesthetic role as shading, ambience of the light and acoustics.
The prize giving ceremony will take place on October 7th at the International Wood Day (Internationale Houtdag) in the Hulstkamp Building, Rotterdam. In addition to the professional jury judging (led by Fred Schoorl, director of BNA) the public will also be able to vote for their favorite project.
