Team CS has won the Architecture Wood Award 2014 for the railway terminal Rotterdam Centraal. The prize was given at the International Wood Event (Internationale Hout Dag) on October 7th. The project was praised for the way in which the use of wood is determinative for the whole station without being dominant. The jury was unanimous in its decision to honor Rotterdam Centraal with the Houtarchitectureprijs 2014.
The goal of the award is to gain publicity for developments in the area of new techniques, sustainable use en possibilities of the renewable commodity wood in the building industry. The award is divided in the categories Architecture and Innovation.
From the jury report: “The new Rotterdam Centraal railway terminal can match oneself against stations in world cities like London, Paris, Brussels, Moscow and Kyoto. The station is overwhelming, unique, but also but also engaging and heartwarming. Wood plays an important role and is fully embraced in the overall design. […] Rotterdam Centraal is an icon for comtemporary architecture in which the use of wood to mitigate the enormous scale of the new station.”
