Our proposal for a mixed-use development in Tianjin, China, is based on three sculptural towers connected by a shared plinth. Punctuated by voids, the triangular, glass-skinned towers offer a combination of superb views and access to interior and rooftops gardens.

A vortex of views

Our mixed-used complex for Tianjin is designed to house high-rise offices in the trio of towers above, and retail space and a hotel in the plinth below. The location, in an up-and-coming business district in Tianjin, boasts sweeping river views, so we made the most of them by turning each tower on its axis to maximise its perspectives. Voids inserted into the towers are another means of optimising the views and also add spaces for a number of gardens.

Masterplan

We maximised the views by turning each tower on its axis.

Vertical gardens

In a district of rapidly rising skyscrapers, our 158,000-m² development takes a softer and more organic approach. Our three towers, varying in height from 120 to 150 m, feature triangular forms with rounded edges and a tapering profile. In the voids within each tower and on the rooftops are sizeable gardens, intended to add high-quality public space to the mixed-use environment.

Our sky gardens add high-quality public space to the mixed-use development.

A green basis

The towers stand on a shared, four-storey plinth intended to house a 22,000-m² shopping mall and a hotel. This part of the complex shares the transparency of the towers, and its rooftops are also greened – planted as a series of terraces that shoppers and hotel users can access from the lower levels. These gardens continue the green zone along the nearby riverbanks and also underline the sustainable credentials of the building.
