Located on Amsterdam's historic Binnengasthuisterrein, the project transforms a former hospital complex into a contemporary university library, bringing together the university's former libraries on Spuistraat and Singel in one central location.
At the heart of the transformation is the covered courtyard, where a spectacular glass roof slopes inward and is supported by a sculptural steel structure known as the Tree of Wisdom. Integrating a staircase, study platforms and connecting bridges, this structure creates a new spatial centre for the library while connecting the different parts of the historic building.
The jury praised the careful execution of the transformation, the craftsmanship demonstrated by both architectural practices and the exceptional covered courtyard, which combines architectural impact with functionality. They also highlighted the dynamic nature of the intervention and the thoughtful balance between generous social spaces and quieter, more intimate study corners.
This award recognises the successful collaboration between MVSA Architects, Buro Van Stigt and the University of Amsterdam in creating a new academic environment within a historic urban setting.
